Despite recent layoffs in its Reality Labs division, Meta is still planning new headsets. The Information reports that Meta will release the Quest 4 in 2026 and a high-end headset in 2027. The Quest 4 will come in two versions, “Pismo Low” (standard) and “Pismo High” (premium).
The high-end headset, called “La Jolla,” is set to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. Additionally, a more affordable headset named Ventura might be released later this year, according to The Verge.
In addition to the headsets, Meta is planning to launch a pair of AR glasses with a genuine display. However, The Information report highlights some skepticism about these glasses.
Unlike the current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, this new pair is expected to weigh around 70 grams and have a “bulky design” due to the display, making them less likely to bear the Ray-Ban branding. EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban’s parent company, reportedly did not approve of the design.
The issue of bulky design is not unexpected, as most AR glasses with displays face similar challenges. Reducing the size of displays to make them comfortably wearable while maintaining adequate battery life and power is difficult. Consequently, many companies that have ventured into AR glasses have compromised on style, which has been a significant hurdle in gaining consumer acceptance.
Despite these design challenges, Meta’s commitment to advancing AR and VR technology remains evident through its continued investment in new products. The Quest 4 and the high-end La Jolla headset signify Meta’s ambition to remain competitive in the VR market, especially against rivals like Apple.
These developments underscore Meta’s strategy to diversify its product lineup with varying price points and features to cater to different segments of the market.
