Apple is preparing to introduce its next-generation M4 Mac lineup, including refreshed models of the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. There’s some uncertainty about whether Apple will host a dedicated event or continue the approach used for the recent iPad mini release, which was announced via press release.
Regardless, these new Macs are expected to be available for purchase starting November 1st. A significant enhancement this time is the inclusion of 16GB of RAM as standard on all M4 Macs, including the base versions of the 14” MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac, which is a welcome change from the previous 8GB base models.
The Mac mini is set for its most dramatic overhaul in 14 years. The redesign is rumored to make the device smaller while removing the USB-A ports in favor of additional USB-C ports. It’s also expected to include front-facing ports similar to the Mac Studio, making it more practical for users.
As Apple’s most affordable desktop computer, the Mac mini’s new look and updated port selection could make it an even more attractive option for those seeking a compact yet powerful Mac.
Apple’s iMac refresh could also lead to updates for its desktop accessories, like the Magic Mouse, Keyboard, and Trackpad.
The company is likely to replace the Lightning connectors on these accessories with USB-C, in line with the European Union’s mandate requiring USB-C compatibility by the end of this year. This shift would bring Apple’s desktop peripherals in line with its other products, such as the iPhones and iPads, which are also transitioning to USB-C.
Another point of interest in this release is the potential availability of the Space Black color option on the base model MacBook Pro. Previously, this color was exclusive to the higher-end M3 Pro and M3 Max versions, while the standard model continued with Space Gray.
The color difference may have been due to timing issues, as the base model shipped with an earlier macOS version. With the M4 MacBook Pro, Apple may standardize its color options, allowing the lower-end models to feature Space Black as well.
Additionally, the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips are expected to debut alongside the base M4 chips, bringing more power to Apple’s high-performance laptops. These chips are anticipated to be more efficient and faster, thanks to TSMC’s 3nm process technology.
The new Macs are also likely to support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, offering significantly faster speeds and reduced interference. With these performance upgrades, design changes, and improved connectivity, the M4 Mac lineup promises to offer substantial advancements across multiple devices.
