Siemens AG has entered into an agreement to acquire ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology (IDT) business, which boasts approximately 650 employees.

This business encompasses intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems within the protective extra-low voltage range and innovative motion control systems, notably utilized in free-range driverless transport systems.

The proposed acquisition will complement Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio and bolster its standing as a premier solutions provider for flexible production automation.

Cedrik Neike, a member of Siemens AG’s Managing Board and CEO of Digital Industries, expressed enthusiasm about the alignment between ebm-papst’s innovative drive systems portfolio and Siemens.

Neike stated, “The acquisition will enable us to tap new business and customer potential in the rapidly growing market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics as well as mobile robot solutions.”

IDT products represent intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems crucial for automating and digitizing production processes.

Their integration into Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio is anticipated to enhance flexibility and productivity in various applications, including mobile robots, driverless transport vehicles, and auxiliary automation processes. Consequently, substantial market growth is foreseen in this segment.

The integration of the IDT portfolio into Siemens’ existing automation offerings and leveraging its global sales network will facilitate new market access and foster significant business opportunities in flexible and autonomous factory automation.

The IDT business of ebm-papst operates in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany, as well as in Oradea, Romania. The parties involved have agreed to keep the purchase price confidential.

Dr. Klaus Geißdörfer, CEO of the ebm-papst Group, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition by Siemens, citing the latter’s global sales organization as a catalyst for maximum growth.

Dr. Geißdörfer highlighted Siemens’ longstanding customer relationship, robust international market penetration, and extensive customer base as factors that will facilitate global market access for ebm-papst’s IDT business.

He indicated that the proceeds from the sale would be reinvested to bolster ebm-papst’s Air Technology and Heating Technology divisions, strengthen its regional presence, and invest in future areas such as digitalization and sustainability.

This investment underscores Siemens’ dedication to sustainable innovation and its position as a leading provider of systems and solutions for forward-looking, flexible production automation.
