Taylor Swift continues to set box office records. Her concert film, “Eras Tour,” earned $31 million in its second weekend, making it the highest-grossing concert film ever at the domestic box office.
This weekend’s earnings reflect a 66% decrease from its opening weekend, a drop that aligns with trends seen in major blockbuster films from Marvel, DC, and Star Wars franchises.
“Swifties returned in large numbers, giving ‘Eras Tour’ a robust encore weekend at the box office,” noted Shawn Robbins, chief media analyst at BoxOffice.com.
“The film keeps breaking records for concert movies, drawing essential foot traffic to theaters during a fourth quarter impacted by Hollywood’s labor disputes.”
With Thursday’s ticket sales nearing $6 million, Swift’s film crossed the $100 million mark in the U.S. and Canada, making it the first film to achieve this milestone.
In total, the “Eras Tour” film has amassed approximately $129.8 million domestically. AMC, the film’s distributor, is expected to update the international box office numbers on Monday.
Should the film surpass $262.5 million by the end of its run in November, it will become the highest-grossing global concert film of all time, surpassing 2009’s “Michael Jackson’s This Is It.”
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “In terms of non-traditional releases, the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie is a highly valuable addition to this October’s movie landscape.
What might have otherwise been a relatively quiet period has already seen a $130 million boost from this unique concert film release.”
Dergarabedian added, “The success of the Swift film highlights how innovative thinking can lead to unexpected results and enhance financial outcomes while demonstrating how such alternative content can fill quieter periods on the movie release calendar.”
