Apple is reportedly considering cost-cutting measures for its Apple Watch SE by replacing the metal portion of its case with rigid plastic. This move aims to reduce production expenses and potentially lower the retail price of the device.
Currently priced at $249, the Apple Watch SE competes with Samsung’s similarly priced smartwatches, though it remains $50 higher. This potential redesign would mark a departure from the current model, which already features a nylon composite plastic material in its back case as of 2022.
In addition to this cost-saving measure, Apple is anticipated to introduce updated models across its Apple Watch lineup by late 2024. This includes possible updates to the regular Apple Watch and the introduction of a new high-end model dubbed the Apple Watch Ultra. The Apple Watch SE has historically seen updates every two years since its launch, aligning with Apple’s strategy to refresh product lines periodically.
The rumored changes to the Apple Watch SE coincide with reports suggesting that Apple’s upcoming Series 10 of the Apple Watch will feature thinner cases and slightly larger screens. These updates are expected to be revealed alongside the iPhone 16 during Apple’s typical September product launch event.
If implemented, the shift to an all-plastic housing for the Apple Watch SE could have environmental implications, potentially impacting the device’s recyclability and overall eco-friendliness.
As Apple continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, these potential changes highlight the company’s ongoing efforts to balance cost efficiency, consumer demand, and environmental considerations within its product development strategies.
