Instagram head Adam Mosseri has announced that new generative AI features are coming to the platform, offering creators more powerful video editing capabilities. These tools will allow users to modify nearly every aspect of their videos using simple text prompts. The editing features, powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, are expected to launch sometime next year. Mosseri expressed that these AI tools would provide creators with more freedom to transform their videos in creative ways, helping them to better bring their ideas to life.
The upcoming features will enable creators to make significant changes to their videos, such as altering their outfits, adjusting their backgrounds, or even adding accessories like jewelry. The AI could also change a creator’s overall appearance, allowing them to transform into different characters or styles. Mosseri previewed some of these tools in a video, showcasing how the background could shift to a snowy scene or how his own likeness could be transformed into an animated puppet.
While these features were demonstrated in a polished manner, it remains unclear if the final user-facing tools will achieve the same level of seamlessness when they are made available. The examples shown in the preview look impressive, but there is no guarantee that all users will experience the same quality of results once the tools are rolled out to the public.
Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, which powers these editing features, was first introduced in October. At that time, Meta highlighted the model’s ability to generate videos and sounds based on simple text inputs, as well as edit existing videos. However, the AI was not made publicly available at the time. This new announcement reveals that Meta intends to leverage the Movie Gen model for Instagram to enhance creators’ ability to customize and edit their videos with AI-driven tools.
This development comes after similar advancements by other companies in the AI video editing space. OpenAI launched its Sora model earlier this month, while Adobe began offering some users access to its Firefly video generator in October. Meta’s move to integrate Movie Gen into Instagram’s editing suite positions the company as a competitor in the growing market for generative AI tools aimed at content creators.
