Apple is reportedly exploring 90Hz display technology that may soon feature on future models of the Studio Display, iPad Air, and 24-inch iMac, all of which currently use 60Hz displays. This rumor, first discussed by an anonymous source on the Upgrade podcast hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell and later shared by 9to5Mac, hints at a “higher refresh rate LCD display with a new liquid motion panel” locked at 90Hz.
This enhancement would place these mid-range Apple devices closer to the display performance of Apple’s Pro-level models, which already support higher refresh rates.
If these reports are accurate, a 90Hz refresh rate would be a notable upgrade for the Studio Display, which has remained unchanged since its launch in March 2022. While Apple fans anticipated a refreshed model with features like mini-LED or ProMotion support (120Hz) by 2024, no such update has appeared.
The Studio Display’s currently unchanged specs have left some users disappointed, particularly as the Pro Display XDR from 2019 is also overdue for an update. Moving to a 90Hz panel would improve screen smoothness without a major redesign or the high production costs associated with mini-LED.
Ross Young, a reputable display analyst known for accurate Apple predictions, reported in early 2023 that Apple had scrapped plans for a mini-LED 27-inch display that would include ProMotion technology. Initially slated for a 2022 release, this monitor was expected to provide 120Hz refresh rates and target users needing higher visual performance.
However, Young announced in April 2023 that the project had been canceled, leaving Apple’s future display plans in question. This has fueled speculation that Apple might instead be prioritizing moderate refresh rate improvements, like the rumored 90Hz panel.
According to the same source, Apple’s new 90Hz display technology may first appear in the upcoming iPad Air, likely to be released in early 2025 and powered by the M3 chip. The 24-inch iMac, which just received an update to Apple’s M4 chip, might see a similar display upgrade, though not before late 2025.
A 90Hz display would bring an enhanced visual experience to the iMac line, benefiting users who rely on smooth visuals for both everyday productivity and creative work, especially considering that the iPad Pro already supports ProMotion’s higher refresh rates.
Currently, the Studio Display comes with a 27-inch 5K LCD panel, a 60Hz refresh rate, P3 color gamut support, and brightness up to 600 nits, priced from $1,599. Moving to a 90Hz refresh rate could offer a mid-tier option in Apple’s lineup, providing smoother motion and a better overall experience without raising the device’s price to the Pro Display XDR level.
If Apple proceeds with this 90Hz technology, it may enhance its competitive standing in the mid-range display market, appealing to users seeking quality visuals for both professional and creative work.
