Apple is reportedly nearing the release of an updated iPhone SE, marking the first refresh of its low-end model since 2022. According to a report by Bloomberg, this new iteration will also serve as a platform for the company’s proprietary 5G modems, which Apple has been developing since acquiring the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion in 2019.
This acquisition was part of Apple’s strategy to enhance its self-reliance in hardware development, including aggressive recruitment efforts to bolster its internal capabilities. However, to date, Apple has yet to launch any devices that utilize these internally designed modems.
The relationship between Apple and Qualcomm has been fraught with challenges. In 2017, Qualcomm filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging patent infringements concerning the speed of internet connections after devices power on, as well as claims related to battery efficiency and data processing.
This legal conflict culminated in a settlement where Apple agreed to pay Qualcomm royalties and entered into a six-year licensing agreement along with a multi-year supply deal for wireless chipsets. Despite these issues, Qualcomm continues to play a significant role in Apple’s modem supply chain.
Currently, Apple continues to rely on Qualcomm for its 5G modem technology, with Qualcomm confirming it will provide modems to Apple until at least 2026.
This ongoing partnership suggests that while Apple is making strides toward self-sufficiency, it is taking a cautious approach to integrating its own modem technology. The decision to first test its in-house modems in a single device like the iPhone SE could indicate Apple’s desire to ensure reliability and performance before a broader rollout.
The forthcoming iPhone SE 4 is expected to resemble the iPhone 14 in design and will be powered by an A18 chip, featuring 8GB of RAM. This combination aims to facilitate advanced features associated with Apple Intelligence.
Notably, the new model will also incorporate Face ID and will eliminate the traditional home button seen in earlier versions of the SE line. Additionally, it is anticipated to include a 48MP wide camera, mirroring the capabilities of the iPhone 15, along with a 12MP front camera, marking a significant upgrade in photography capabilities.
The iPhone SE 4 is projected to be introduced sometime in the spring of next year, generating anticipation among consumers and industry watchers alike.
