Google’s highly anticipated Android 15 update is nearing its official rollout, with a stable release expected for Pixel devices on October 15. This update will be followed by a Feature Drop in December, introducing several enhancements aimed at improving user interaction, particularly with notifications.

One significant addition in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta is the “notification cooldown” feature. This aims to address the annoyance of receiving numerous consecutive notifications, especially from friends who prefer to send multiple short messages. By lowering the volume of such notifications from specific apps, this feature seeks to reduce interruptions and enhance the overall messaging experience.

Another key feature on the horizon is the “old notification rejection” functionality. This is particularly beneficial for users with multiple Android devices, as it helps manage the influx of notifications that can overwhelm a secondary device after a period of inactivity. By rejecting notifications older than two weeks, users can avoid distractions from outdated alerts, allowing them to focus on more current information.

Although the old notification rejection feature will not completely mute older notifications, it will prevent them from generating sounds or vibrations. Users will still receive basic details, such as who the notification is from and which app it belongs to, but the content will be hidden. This approach will utilize timestamps to determine which notifications to filter out, contributing to a cleaner notification experience.

Beyond these two features, Google is also working on other enhancements, such as syncing notification dismissals across devices and updating notification icons to match regular app icons. These improvements reflect Google’s commitment to creating a more user-friendly and streamlined notification system within the Android ecosystem.
