Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded is set to significantly enhance the sandbox stealth game for the Quest 3, as revealed during the recent VR Games Showcase. This new version, developed by XR Games, builds upon the original Hitman 3 VR, which initially launched on PSVR and later on Steam. The upcoming release will feature upgraded visuals and a host of new features tailored specifically for the Quest 3 headset.

The journey to Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded began three years ago when IO Interactive sought to expand the game’s reach with VR support beyond its initial platforms. Recognizing Quest’s large user base, IOI aimed to deliver a fully untethered VR experience.

However, creating a port for Quest proved to be a substantial technological challenge, leading IOI to collaborate with external studios. XR Games was chosen for this ambitious project, a moment Thandi, the studio’s CEO, considers a major milestone.

Initially targeting Quest 2, XR Games soon realized that the technical limitations of the older headset posed significant obstacles. With Quest 3’s anticipated release and better capabilities, the decision was made to focus on the newer hardware. Despite the desire to reach a larger audience with the Quest 2, practical constraints of time and budget led to this strategic shift.

In adapting Hitman 3 VR for Quest 3, XR Games took into account feedback from previous VR releases, aiming to address issues with control schemes and overall gameplay experience. The team faced the challenge of adapting IO Interactive’s Glacier Engine, originally designed for consoles, to work effectively on the Quest 3. This process involved overcoming technical hurdles and making significant adjustments to ensure compatibility with the new headset.

The visual style of Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded was carefully chosen for optimization rather than just aesthetics. Drawing from their experience with Zombieland: Headshot Fever, XR Games developed an art style that balances visual quality with the performance constraints of Quest 3. The decision to use floating hands instead of a full-body model was made to enhance performance and immersion, addressing previous issues with outfit changes.

Gameplay enhancements include more immersive physical interactions, such as climbing and manipulating objects, with room-scale movement for exploration. While the Quest’s processing power limits the extent of physics-based interactions, XR Games is committed to supporting and improving the game.

Features like dual-wielding and an interactive wristwatch aim to enrich the experience. Although it remains uncertain whether all content from the flatscreen version will be included in VR, Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded is poised to offer a compelling experience on the Quest 3.
