NASA’s upcoming spacesuits might be ready for the runway. Axiom Space has partnered with the Italian luxury fashion house Prada to develop the lunar spacesuits for NASA’s Artemis III mission.

“Prada’s technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing methods, and innovative design concepts will introduce advanced technologies crucial for ensuring both astronaut comfort on the lunar surface and the essential human factors missing from older spacesuit designs,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space.

To create these suits, Prada’s team of engineers will collaborate with Axiom Space’s team on both the design and materials, ensuring the suits are prepared for the unique challenges of space.

The AxEMU spacesuit is designed to offer improved flexibility compared to previous spacesuit models, as well as enhanced protection for astronauts operating in the harsh conditions of space.

Additionally, the suits will feature specialized tools for exploration and scientific research, allowing astronauts to explore the lunar surface more extensively than before.

The Artemis III mission is currently scheduled to launch in December 2025. It is expected to last 30 days and will be the first human moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Four astronauts are anticipated to participate in the mission.
