Nissan is recalling over 700,000 Rogue and Rogue Sport compact SUVs due to the risk of accidental shutdown while driving.

The recall affects certain model years: 2016 through 2020 for the Nissan Rogue and 2017 through 2022 for the Rogue Sport, which use jackknife-style keys.

These keys have a metal blade that flips out from a plastic key fob. Over time, an internal joint in the key can weaken, causing the key to fold unexpectedly while in use.

If this occurs while the key is in the ignition, it can result in the vehicle being accidentally turned off if the key is touched or bumped.

The recall specifically targets the base Rogue S and Rogue Sport S models.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan has not yet developed a solution to the problem.

Once a solution is found, it will be provided by Nissan dealers free of charge, as per NHTSA guidelines.

In a statement, Nissan advised, “Owners with a key that will not remain in the extended ‘open’ position should contact their local authorized Nissan dealer for diagnosis.”

Meanwhile, owners of the affected vehicles are advised not to attach anything to the keys that might pull them down and to insert the key into the ignition in a direction that allows it to fold upward rather than downward.

A Nissan spokesperson stated that the company is not aware of any deaths or injuries resulting from this issue. Nissan will start notifying owners about the recall later in March.
