Google is testing a new Gemini-powered feature in the Google Home app called “Help me create,” designed to make smart home automation more user-friendly. This feature allows users to generate custom automations for their smart home with simple prompts like “Turn on all lights at sunset” or “Help me sleep better.” It builds on the script editor’s “Help me script” functionality by simplifying the process and targeting a broader audience. Unlike Personal Routines, these automations have distinct components and greater flexibility in how they are structured.
Automations created with “Help me create” consist of three main parts: Starters, Conditions, and Actions. Starters determine when the automation begins, such as a specific time or device state. Conditions, which are optional, serve as restrictions and are evaluated whenever an automation is triggered.
Actions specify what the automation does, such as adjusting speaker volume or turning lights on or off. Users can include multiple Starters, Conditions, and Actions in one automation, with flexibility to set whether “Any” or “All” conditions must be met.
To test this feature, users must opt into the Public Preview of the Google Home app and enable “Experimental AI features.” From there, they can navigate to the Automations tab and use “Help me create” to build automations. The feature allows users to type or speak their requests, generating automations that can be further edited. Google provides suggested prompts to guide users, such as “Turn off the lights at 11 p.m. every night” or “Lock all the doors when everyone’s away.”
The feature demonstrates its utility with a wide range of possible automations. Examples include reminders for meditation, announcements over smart speakers, and energy-saving measures. However, not all devices and features are currently supported. Google is refining the system during this testing phase, which is limited to U.S. English and not yet widely available.
By integrating AI, Google aims to make smart home automation more accessible and intuitive. “Help me create” enhances the flexibility of home automation, enabling users to create personalized solutions with minimal effort. While the feature is still in development, it has the potential to simplify the smart home experience significantly, laying the groundwork for broader accessibility in the future.
