MatX, a startup focused on creating chips tailored for large language models (LLMs), has successfully raised $80 million in a Series A funding round, just a few months after securing $25 million in seed funding. This new round was led by Spark Capital, and sources reveal that the company’s valuation reached approximately $300 million post-money. The rapid growth in funding underscores the growing demand for chips that can efficiently handle AI workloads, particularly as AI models become increasingly complex.
Founded by Mike Gunter and Reiner Pope, both former Google engineers who worked on the company’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), MatX aims to address the chip shortage for AI applications. With years of experience designing high-performance AI hardware, the two founders are well-positioned to tackle the challenge. They focus on providing chips designed to manage AI workloads that involve billions of parameters, offering a balance between affordability and high performance.
MatX’s chips are designed specifically for AI models that require handling at least 7 billion parameters, with optimal performance achieved at around 20 billion parameters. The company’s advanced interconnect technology, which facilitates faster and more efficient data transfer between chips, is a key feature of their product. This innovation makes MatX’s chips well-suited for scaling AI tasks across large clusters, an essential capability for modern AI systems.
The company has set an ambitious goal to create processors that are 10 times more efficient than Nvidia’s widely used GPUs when it comes to training and running LLMs. This bold claim aligns with the increasing demand for specialized hardware as the AI industry continues to expand. MatX’s focus on improving performance while lowering costs could make their chips a valuable alternative in a market currently dominated by Nvidia.
