Cyan’s latest update, Firmament version 2.0, brings advanced graphical features and technical upgrades to the VR puzzle game. This version introduces ray-traced reflections, adding depth and realism to the game’s visuals, especially for players using high-end VR setups. The game has transitioned from Unreal Engine 4.27+ to Unreal Engine 5.3.2 and now relies on OpenXR, which has resolved various stability issues.
NVIDIA’s DLSS is also now available in VR mode, providing performance enhancements that help maintain a smooth experience during immersive gameplay.
With these updates, Cyan has also adjusted its official support for certain VR headsets. Support is ending for the original Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and Oculus Rift S headsets. However, the HTC Vive Pro remains supported, ensuring it will continue to run smoothly with future updates. Although players can technically still use unsupported headsets, Cyan will no longer provide official support, signaling the company’s focus on newer VR platforms and devices.
Cyan also announced that the PlayStation VR2 release of Firmament, initially aimed for a fall 2024 launch, has been delayed to Q1 2025. This decision stems from the need to update PlayStation SDKs to address a few remaining compatibility issues with PlayStation hardware. Consequently, the new target includes a simultaneous launch on PS4, PS5, and PlayStation VR2, giving Cyan additional time to refine the game’s performance and ensure it meets PlayStation standards.
Currently, Firmament is available on Steam, with optional VR support for PC players. This release allows fans to experience Cyan’s unique puzzle-solving and storytelling in both flat-screen and VR formats, while the team continues to develop the PlayStation VR2 version. Firmament’s ongoing improvements reflect Cyan’s commitment to delivering a high-quality experience across multiple platforms.
