Apple is rumored to be preparing to launch a new device in early 2024, introducing a product that combines artificial intelligence, smart home capabilities, and app functionality. Codenamed J490, this device will feature a six-inch screen, a camera, a rechargeable battery, and built-in speakers, with the versatility to be wall-mounted or used on surfaces. This product will reportedly offer a touch interface, support for Siri, and Apple Intelligence, allowing users to control and interact with various smart home functions easily.
The J490 device is expected to enable users to manage smart home devices, browse the web, make FaceTime calls, listen to music, and check security camera feeds. It may even show calendar information, display photos, and provide news updates. Notably, a more advanced version of the device is anticipated later, which will feature a robotic arm capable of adjusting the screen’s position, adding functionality, and possibly enhancing the user experience for activities like video calls or viewing information from different angles.
This new device will enter the competitive market of smart home hubs, going head-to-head with similar products from Amazon and Google, such as the Echo Show, Echo Hub, and Nest Hub. The initial version of Apple’s device will be priced to match these products, though the more advanced version featuring the robotic arm could be significantly more expensive, potentially reaching $1,000. Apple intends to encourage consumers to buy multiple units for various rooms, possibly using them as an in-house intercom system.
Originally rumored in September, the J490 device has also been internally dubbed “HomeAccessory” and is said to combine features of several existing Apple products, including the iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod. Expected to run on the A18 chip, this device is anticipated to support advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, suggesting it may offer a sophisticated and integrated user experience that leverages Apple’s ecosystem of services and devices.
In addition to the J490 device, Apple is reportedly exploring another potential new category: smart glasses. Recently, Apple began studying existing smart glasses products and gathering feedback from its employees to assess the viability of entering this market. The company is planning more focus groups and research sessions to gather user insights under its Product Systems Quality team, signaling Apple’s continued interest in expanding into new areas of consumer technology.
