Android 15 QPR2 is set to bring a significant upgrade for Pixel 6 and newer devices, delivering a major update to the Linux kernel that powers these phones. Google initially pushed the new Linux 6.1.99 kernel to its Pixel 9 series but has now expanded the rollout to cover all Tensor-powered Pixel devices. This marks a notable improvement in the operating system’s core infrastructure, especially for devices running on Google’s in-house Tensor chips, as it aligns all recent Pixels on a unified kernel version.
Prior to this update, Tensor-based Pixel models were running on different Linux kernel versions, with the Pixel 6 series on Linux 5.10 and the Pixel 8 series on 5.15. Now, with Linux 6.1, every device from Pixel 6 onward will be on the same kernel version, which simplifies Google’s maintenance and support efforts. This alignment reduces the fragmentation across devices, making it easier for Google to provide consistent and timely updates across its Pixel lineup.
Currently available only through the Android 15 QPR2 beta, this kernel update isn’t recommended for non-developers, as beta versions can carry risks like instability and battery drain. Casual users should wait for the stable release, expected to come in March 2025 as part of Google’s scheduled Pixel Feature Drop. Until then, developers can leverage this beta release to test and optimize their applications on the new kernel, contributing to a smoother user experience once it goes live.
The kernel update affects a wide array of Pixel models: Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, and the Pixel Fold. The Pixel 9 series and newer Pixel Fold, however, already shipped with Linux 6.1, so these devices won’t need the update. By unifying all these models under a single kernel version, Google can also better support its Longevity GRF program, designed to ensure that devices receive long-term updates, meeting rigorous certification requirements with future Android releases.
Kernel updates are essential not only for security but for maintaining compatibility with new Android versions. This Linux 6.1 update is a strategic move by Google to future-proof its Pixel devices, helping ensure they stay secure, efficient, and up-to-date over time. The March 2025 Feature Drop will mark the full rollout of this update, enhancing device performance and longevity, which aligns with Google’s goals to provide lasting software support across its lineup.
