Google Fiber has officially launched its services in Idaho, marking a significant milestone for the state’s internet accessibility. The announcement was made during a launch event held in Pocatello, which is the first city in Idaho to receive Google Fiber’s high-speed internet. The decision to serve Pocatello was announced back in April 2023, and the event showcased the company’s commitment to enhancing digital connectivity in the area.
During the launch, local officials, including Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad, emphasized the importance of gigabit internet for the community. High-speed internet is seen as essential for attracting job opportunities, promoting business growth, and supporting various online services, including education and telehealth. The event was also an opportunity to celebrate this advancement, with local food truck Beixy’s Kitchen serving empanadas to attendees, creating a festive atmosphere.
Alberto Garcia, Google Fiber’s Government, and Community Affairs Manager, highlighted the extensive behind-the-scenes efforts that led to this launch. He expressed gratitude to the city of Pocatello for its collaboration throughout the process, noting that it took over two years of negotiations and planning to reach this point. The partnership involved signing agreements to allow Google Fiber to install its infrastructure and lay the necessary fiber optic cables.
Garcia further acknowledged the city’s efforts in protecting residents and maintaining Pocatello’s roads while facilitating the installation of the new infrastructure. He pointed out that implementing such a project requires considerable engineering and technical expertise, underscoring the complexities involved in bringing high-speed internet to the community.
As of this week, Google Fiber has begun serving its first customers in the Alameda neighborhood of Pocatello, with plans to expand its services throughout the city. Garcia assured residents that the company aims to provide them with an additional internet option, enhancing overall connectivity and access to digital resources. This development represents a significant step toward fostering a more connected and resourceful community in Pocatello.
