Apple is reportedly working on a smart home display that draws design inspiration from the iconic iMac G4 of the early 2000s. According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the upcoming countertop tablet will feature a square screen set at an angle atop a small base, evoking the circular design of the iMac G4.

This design may also house the device’s speakers. The initial model is expected to be released next year, with a more advanced version featuring a robotic limb for adjusting the screen’s position to follow, potentially launching around 2026.

The first, more affordable model is said to have a screen size comparable to two iPhones placed side by side. Its primary function will be to control smart home devices, but it will also support applications such as FaceTime, Calendar, and multimedia display capabilities for photos and videos. This versatile use suggests that Apple aims to integrate the device seamlessly into users’ daily routines and home environments.

In contrast, the more expensive model will feature a larger display and enhanced capabilities, including the aforementioned robotic arm for dynamic positioning. While the pricing for the base model has yet to be confirmed, Gurman estimates that the high-end version may retail for nearly $1,000. This substantial investment indicates Apple’s positioning of the device as a premium product in the smart home market.

Both iterations of the smart home display are expected to incorporate Apple Intelligence, which suggests advanced integration with Apple’s ecosystem and smart home functionalities.

This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of enhancing user experience through innovative technology while creating a cohesive ecosystem for its devices and services. As anticipation builds for the launch, Apple’s foray into smart home displays could significantly impact how users interact with technology in their homes.
