Apple recently introduced the seventh-generation iPad mini, its first update in three years, bringing several new features and improvements. The device is set to launch this Wednesday and includes 12 major changes compared to the previous model. These updates focus on enhancing performance, storage, connectivity, and functionality, making the iPad mini 7 a more versatile device for various users.
One of the key upgrades is the inclusion of the A17 Pro chip, which was first used in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Although the iPad mini 7’s version has a 5-core GPU instead of a 6-core, Apple claims it offers up to 30% faster CPU performance than the A15 Bionic chip in the older model. This performance boost should allow for smoother multitasking and more efficient handling of demanding applications.
Another significant change is the increase in RAM, with the iPad mini 7 now equipped with 8GB of memory, doubling the 4GB found in its predecessor. This upgrade supports the upcoming Apple Intelligence feature, set to be released with iPadOS 18.1. The device also now works with the Apple Pencil Pro, featuring a hover capability that allows users to preview strokes before touching the screen, which will be especially useful for creative tasks.
Connectivity has seen improvements, too. The iPad mini 7 features a faster USB-C port, with data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps, twice the speed of the previous model. Additionally, the cellular version now supports only eSIM technology, phasing out the physical nano-SIM card slot. The new iPad mini also offers Wi-Fi 6E support, which provides faster wireless speeds over the 6 GHz band, enhancing internet performance for those with compatible routers.
Other notable upgrades include a base storage increase from 64GB to 128GB and the addition of Final Cut Pro support, giving users more powerful video editing capabilities. The camera system has also been enhanced with “Smart HDR 4” for more detailed and vivid photos compared to “Smart HDR 3” on the previous model.
Lastly, the iPad mini 7 features a subtle design change, with “iPad mini” inscribed on the back, a shift from the simple “iPad” found on earlier versions. These changes make the new iPad mini a more powerful and appealing device for a range of users.
