At the WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple introduced iOS 18, highlighting its new Apple Intelligence platform, which brings a range of features. Some functions like Writing Tools, Notification Summarization, and Clean Up will be available soon, though others are delayed. The anticipation is high for several key updates, especially the integration of ChatGPT into Siri, which is expected to launch with iOS 18.2 by the end of this year.

The upcoming ChatGPT integration marks a significant enhancement to Siri. According to findings by MacRumors, Apple’s backend code includes references to this new feature, indicating that Apple is preparing to support third-party large language models (LLMs). Once integrated, Siri will be able to access ChatGPT for advanced queries, including handling requests about photos or documents. Furthermore, the Writing Tools feature will leverage ChatGPT to help users compose and illustrate content.

Apple has been careful to address privacy concerns with this update. Users will have control over when ChatGPT is used, and permission will be required before sharing any personal data. Apple has also noted that ChatGPT is available for free without the need for an account, though users who subscribe to ChatGPT’s premium service will be able to link their accounts to access additional features within Siri and Writing Tools. This ensures that user privacy is maintained while offering advanced capabilities.

In addition to ChatGPT integration, iOS 18.2 will introduce several creative features. “Image Playground” is one such tool, allowing users to create animated, illustrated, or sketched images quickly. This app will be embedded into other apps like Messages while also existing as a standalone feature. Another notable addition is “Genmoji,” which allows users to generate personalized emojis based on descriptions or even images from their photo libraries.

Looking forward to 2025, Apple plans to further expand Siri’s capabilities. The assistant will become more context-aware, enabling it to remember previous interactions across devices. For instance, Siri will be able to recall details like a podcast someone sent weeks ago. This advancement will make Siri a more intuitive and versatile tool for managing tasks across Apple’s ecosystem.
