This information comes from an examination of Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP), revealing that the “min_sdk_version” is set to “Baklava.” This designation contrasts with this year’s Android 15, which is referred to as “VanillaIceCream.” The indication that Baklava will remain in place until the SDK is finalized suggests that the transition to version number “16” will occur afterward.
In addition to the codename, there are indications that Android 16 may launch much earlier than previously anticipated, potentially in the second quarter of 2025. This speculation arises from an analysis of Google’s Compatibility Definition Document (CDD), which hints at plans to introduce the next Android operating system in “25Q2.”
Developer teamb58 has confirmed this timeline after noticing similar references in several AOSP patches. Some Google developers have also referred to Android 16 as “Android W,” aligning with the company’s established alphabetical naming convention.
