Sony has revealed that the price of the PlayStation 5 in Japan will see a notable increase, effective September 2nd. Both the standard and Digital Editions of the console will rise by ¥13,000, translating to about £70. This adjustment will bring the price of the disc version to ¥79,980 (approximately £420) and the Digital Edition to ¥72,980 (around £380).
The company attributed this price hike to the “recent challenging external environment,” which includes fluctuations in the global economy and their effects on business. This explanation was shared via Sony’s Japanese PlayStation Blog.
This is not the first time Sony has raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in Japan. When the console launched in 2020, the standard edition was priced at ¥49,980 and the Digital Edition at ¥39,980. With this latest increase, the standard edition’s price has risen by about ¥30,000 and the Digital Edition by ¥33,000 since the initial release.
The price increase also extends to various PlayStation accessories, such as DualSense Wireless Controllers and PlayStation VR2, starting from September 2nd. Sony had previously raised prices for the PS5 in Japan in 2022, which was followed by a similar increase in the UK and Europe. However, there is no current indication that this new Japanese price hike will be mirrored in other regions.
