After 17 years, iPhone users are finally gaining a long-awaited feature: call recording. The iOS 18.1 developer beta 1 introduces this capability, which Android users have had for years. This update is particularly exciting for those who frequently need to capture important details from phone calls, eliminating the need for hurried note-taking during conversations.
To use this new feature, iPhone users must join the iOS 18.1 beta waitlist via Settings. Once they receive the update, they will find an audio recording option at the top-left corner of the call screen. Activating this option triggers an announcement that the call is being recorded, and the recording is saved in the built-in Notes app after the call ends.
A standout aspect of this feature is its automatic transcription. Users can review transcripts of their calls and even have Apple Intelligence summarize conversations. This feature utilizes the on-device Neural Engine, ensuring that personal data remains private and isn’t processed by Apple or third-party services.
Currently, the call recording feature is available exclusively to iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max users participating in Apple’s developer program. Public testers will gain access in the coming weeks, with the final iOS 18.1 release expected in October. While this beta version may have some bugs, its potential to enhance productivity and organization is evident.
Additionally, the iOS 18.1 developer beta 1 includes early access to new Apple Intelligence features, such as an updated search interface for call history, an autofill feature for phone numbers, and a seamless SIM card switching option during calls.
