Google has begun rolling out its August 2024 security update for its range of phones, addressing several persistent issues, particularly with the Pixel series. The update, detailed in a community post, covers various devices including the Pixel 5a (5G), Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold.

Specific versions of the update are assigned to different devices, with the Pixel 6 series receiving version AP2A.240805.005.F1 and the Pixel 8a receiving AP2A.240805.005.A1.

The August update primarily focuses on fixing display and graphics issues, particularly a “screen brightness flicker” problem affecting the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. This flicker occurred under certain conditions, and the update aims to resolve it.

Additionally, the update includes enhancements to screen performance and stability for these models. Google has highlighted these fixes as significant improvements for users experiencing display-related problems.

Other key fixes in the update include a solution for a reboot loop issue that affected the Pixel 6 series after a factory reset. This issue caused devices to fail to turn on properly, displaying an error message indicating potential data corruption.

Google had previously provided a workaround, but this update offers a permanent fix. Another fix addresses stability issues when switching between users with and without screen locks on all eligible Pixel phones.

The update also includes several security fixes. Notably, a “High” severity issue with a Pixel subcomponent has been addressed, along with three “Moderate” level fixes for Qualcomm components, such as the Pixel camera and WLAN. These fixes aim to enhance the overall security and performance of the devices, ensuring a more stable and secure user experience.

This security update follows closely after the rollout of the August 2024 patch for Pixel Watch models and comes just ahead of a planned hardware event on August 13. At this event, Google is expected to reveal the next Pixel 9 series and a successor to the Pixel Fold, among other announcements.

This timing indicates Google’s ongoing commitment to improving its hardware and software ecosystem in preparation for new product releases.
