The Google Pixel Watch 3, revealed at Google’s August hardware event alongside the Pixel 9 series, introduces several major upgrades. This new model features a larger dial suited for bigger wrists and includes advanced safety functionalities. A standout enhancement is the incorporation of an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, which brings significant improvements to the watch’s capabilities.
With the UWB chip, the Pixel Watch 3 gains several new features. Notably, it supports the enhanced Find My Device network, allowing for more accurate tracking of the watch. Additionally, the watch can now serve as a digital car key, providing a modern, keyless entry solution for vehicles. A recent discovery by Android Authority also highlights that the UWB chip improves the Watch Unlock feature, offering faster access when paired with compatible Pixel devices.
According to recent reports, the latest Google Play Services beta reveals that the Watch Unlock feature switches to Bluetooth when Airplane mode is activated. This switch results in a minor delay in unlocking speed due to the temporary disabling of UWB. However, once Airplane mode is turned off, the watch promptly reactivates UWB for quicker unlocking.
The Pixel Watch 3 will offer users a choice to enable or disable the UWB feature for Watch Unlock. Users can select between “Use Watch Unlock” and “Use Watch Unlock without Ultra-Wideband” in the watch settings. To utilize this feature, both the watch and the connected phone must have UWB support, available on devices like the Galaxy S24 series and Pixel 9 series.
Despite these advancements, the Pixel Watch 3 retains the non-repairable design seen in previous models. The new UWB chip and its features mark a significant upgrade, although the precise performance difference between UWB and Bluetooth unlocking remains to be determined. The Pixel Watch 3 will go on sale starting September 10, with pre-orders currently open for those eager to explore its new features and take advantage of early offers.
