Google has completed testing Android 15 with Beta 4.2, but the release for Pixel devices is now expected to be delayed until October, possibly mid-month. According to a report by Android Authority, the delay is attributed to efforts to enhance the stability of the new update. As a result, Pixel devices will continue to receive updates based on Android 14, including the September 2024 security patch.
Initially, there were expectations that Android 15 might be released in August or September, especially after Beta 4.2 was issued. However, the anticipation shifted as Google provided instructions indicating that the final stable release of Android 15 would be coming soon, which now seems to be scheduled for October.
In the meantime, Google is moving forward with testing Android 15 QPR1, which is expected to be released in December. This indicates that while the rollout of Android 15 is delayed, the company is already working on subsequent updates for the operating system.
Despite the delay in the public release of Android 15, the update appears to be quite stable based on Beta 4.2. The Pixel 9 series is currently shipping with Android 14, with some features from Android 15 being backported. Notable additions in Android 15 include a new Private space feature, an updated Material You volume panel, and changes to the widgets picker.
Android 15 is also set to be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) next week. Although the source code release typically coincides with the Pixel update, past releases have seen discrepancies, with some delays observed. This year’s gap between the AOSP release and the Pixel update could be longer than usual.
