OpenAI has started introducing its advanced Voice Mode feature for ChatGPT, initially available to a limited number of paying users. By this fall, the feature will be accessible to all ChatGPT Plus members, promising a more engaging and natural conversational experience with real-time interactions.
The updated Voice Mode allows for interruptions and can detect and respond to user emotions, offering a more dynamic and responsive communication experience. This advanced version improves upon the previous voice support, which was introduced last September, by using a single multimodal model instead of three separate models, thus reducing conversation latency.
The advanced Voice Mode had a public demo in May, but the release faced criticism due to a voice that closely resembled Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of an AI character in the film “Her.” Despite OpenAI’s claims that the voice was not intended to mimic Johansson, the backlash led to a delay in the feature’s rollout, and the controversial voice was subsequently removed.
The new Voice Mode aims to enhance user interaction with ChatGPT by making conversations more fluid and responsive, addressing earlier criticisms, and ensuring a more natural and engaging experience.
