In the iOS 18.1 developer preview, Apple introduces an AI-enhanced feature that allows users to record and transcribe phone calls, as reported by MacRumors. This new functionality, available in the beta version, includes a “record” button on the call screen for users to initiate audio logging of their conversations. Additionally, all participants on the call are automatically notified that the recording is in progress.

After initiating the recording, a notification is played for all callers to inform them that the call is being recorded. The Phone app takes care of the recording and creates a transcription, which is subsequently saved in the Notes app. Users can access both the complete audio recording and an AI-generated summary of the conversation in the Notes app.

This feature was first showcased by Apple at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It appears particularly useful for journalists conducting interviews over the phone or for anyone who needs to retain accurate records of important conversations, such as medical consultations.

The iOS 18.1 developer beta includes other enhancements, such as natural language search in photos, email summaries in the Mail app, and a refreshed design for Siri. However, a more advanced AI-driven version of Siri is anticipated but may not be available until 2025, according to Bloomberg.
