Huawei is set to reveal a new tri-fold smartphone designed to transform into a Z-shape by the end of 2024. This development has been teased by Chinese media, which notes that Huawei has been working on this innovative device for five years.
CEO Yu Chengdong recently highlighted the device’s long development period during a live event, asserting that while others may envision such technology, only Huawei has successfully brought it to fruition.
The smartphone features a unique folding mechanism with a double hinge system, allowing it to fold in both directions and form a Z-shape. Despite being termed a tri-fold, it actually has two distinct folds but accommodates three separate screens. This design enables the device to unfold into a substantial ten-inch display, comparable to the size of Apple’s 9th-generation iPad.
Huawei’s new device incorporates several technological advancements. Each of its three screens has different thicknesses and utilizes lightweight glass to minimize weight and bulk. The rear-facing camera is integrated into one of the screens, while the other screens feature bumps and recesses, which likely serve as a locking mechanism. Speculation suggests that the screens are sourced from Chinese display maker BOE.
The phone will run on HarmonyOS and be powered by the Kirin 9100 processor, with an expected retail price of ¥15,000 ($2,065). Although Huawei has not yet disclosed detailed progress on the device, it is anticipated to launch in late 2024, potentially aligning with the release of Apple’s iPhone 16 series, which is expected to be non-foldable.
In the broader market context, foldable smartphones have seen a significant increase in shipments, up 49 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024. However, they still represent less than two percent of the global smartphone market. Apple is reportedly exploring foldable technology, with plans for a foldable iPhone potentially in development for 2026.
