Apple has released iOS 17.6, urging users to update immediately due to the inclusion of 35 critical security fixes. This update addresses significant vulnerabilities within Apple’s iPhone operating system, underscoring the importance of applying this patch to ensure device security.
Although Apple provides limited details on the specific issues addressed to avoid giving potential attackers a head start, the support page reveals that iOS 17.6 targets both Kernel and WebKit flaws. The Kernel, which is central to the operating system, and WebKit, the engine behind Safari, both contain security holes that have been patched in this update.
The iOS 17.6 upgrade follows a previous major security update, iOS 17.5, released in mid-May. This new update addresses two critical Kernel vulnerabilities, CVE-2024-27863 and CVE-2024-40788, which could compromise the system’s stability or allow attackers physical access to manipulate the device. Additionally, it fixes eight WebKit vulnerabilities, including CVE-2024-40785, which could lead to cross-site scripting attacks.
Alongside iOS 17.6, Apple has also released iOS 16.7.9 for older iPhones, though it addresses fewer security issues. Updating to iOS 17.6 is highly recommended as it may be the final significant update before iOS 18 is launched in September. Users wary of immediately adopting new major releases might prefer this update for its robust security enhancements.
The iOS 17.6 update is compatible with a range of devices, including the iPhone XS and later, various iPad models, and others. For optimal security, while awaiting iOS 18, users should promptly update their devices by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.
