Twitter is Now X.com As Elon Musk Implements URL Change

The social network formerly known as Twitter has officially adopted X.com for all its core systems. Typing twitter.com into your browser will now redirect to Elon Musk’s favored domain, although results may vary depending on browser choice and login status at the time of publication.

A message at the bottom of the X login page states, “We are letting you know that we are changing our URL, but your privacy and data protection settings remain the same.”

The domain transition is one of the more awkward aspects of Elon Musk’s rebranding efforts. Although many parts of X transitioned to the new branding long ago—such as its official account, mobile apps, and “X Premium” (formerly Blue) subscriptions—the platform’s URLs remained twitter.com since Musk initiated the switch to X.

The URL changes began back in August of last year when some Verge staffers noticed x.com links in the share sheet of X’s iOS app. This clumsy transition has facilitated phishing attacks, according to Brian Krebs last month.

Elon Musk tweeted on May 17, 2024, that “All core systems are now on https://t.co/bOUOek5Cvy.”

Musk has a long history with the x.com URL, having launched a business under the name in 1999 that eventually merged with what would become PayPal. For this modern version of the company, Musk envisions it becoming a WeChat-like “everything app.”

One thing is certain: it’s not Twitter anymore.
