Amidst concerns over food safety, Trader Joe’s, a popular California-based supermarket chain, has voluntarily recalled fresh basil following the discovery of a multistate salmonella outbreak.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have identified a potential link between certain shipments of the herb and reported cases of illness across several states.
The affected product, packaged in a 2.5-ounce plastic clamshell under the label “Infinite Herbs,” was distributed between February 1 and April 6. Trader Joe’s ceased shipment on April 12, and any remaining contaminated product should no longer be available for purchase.
However, customers who may have purchased basil during the recall period are urged to check for specific details, including the UPC code (8 18042 02147 7) and product origin (Colombia).
Trader Joe’s Basil Recall: Collaborative Efforts in Response to Salmonella Outbreak
The recall extends beyond Trader Joe’s locations, as Infinite Herbs, the Miami-based supplier, has also expanded its recall to include Melissa’s brand organic fresh basil sold at Dierbergs Markets in Illinois and Missouri between February 10 and February 20.
The company has expressed a commitment to prioritizing consumer safety and is actively investigating the source of contamination in collaboration with the affected farm.
Currently, the CDC has reported a dozen cases of illness across seven states, with one individual requiring hospitalization. Symptoms of salmonella infection may manifest within six hours to six days and include diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal discomforts.
Consumers experiencing such symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly and report their condition to the FDA through designated channels.
In response to the recall, both Infinite Herbs and Trader Joe’s have provided contact information for customer inquiries and concerns.
Infinite Herbs can be reached at (305) 599-9255 ext. 148, while Trader Joe’s customer service hotline is (626) 599-3817. Additionally, consumers are encouraged to contact FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators for further assistance.
