Intel’s CFO, David Zinser, has hinted at a forthcoming “Windows refresh” expected to be released next year, which appears to confirm my earlier report that Microsoft is aiming for a 2024 launch for the next iteration of Windows, following a significant internal restructuring of its development schedule.
According to PCGamer, Zinser mentioned in a discussion with Citi: “We actually think ’24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh.
And we still think that the installed base is pretty old and does require a refresh, and we think next year may be the start of that, given the Windows catalyst. So we’re optimistic about how things will play out beginning in ’24.”
This statement is noteworthy as it serves as an informal confirmation that a major Windows update is anticipated next year, potentially branded as “Windows 12.”
The term “refresh” was also used during the development of Windows 11 prior to its official announcement in June 2021.
Regarding the next version of Windows, sources indicate that development has accelerated in recent months. Active development is now progressing rapidly, with most of the work expected to be finished by mid-2024.
Sources also reveal that the upcoming version of Windows will emphasize deeper integration of AI and cloud features to enhance productivity. An updated interface is also planned, along with various quality-of-life improvements. Importantly, the OS will not require a subscription to use.
