Netflix To Allow Customers To Keep Rented DVDs As The Company Concludes the Service

Netflix will allow customers to keep its DVDs as it concludes its physical disc rental service after 25 years.

Over the past decade, with the rise of streaming platforms, physical copies of movies and shows have become less necessary for many viewers.

Despite this shift, Netflix continued its DVD-by-mail service through DVD.com. However, in April, the company announced it would discontinue the service by September 29.

Initially, Netflix informed customers that they would need to return their discs by October 29. On Monday, the company updated its policy, stating that there will be no charges for discs not returned after the shutdown date.

Customers will also have the option to receive up to 10 free mystery DVDs. Since launching its DVD-by-mail service in 1998, Netflix has sent out over 5.2 billion physical discs. In contrast, DVD sales peaked in 2005, reaching $16.3 billion.

While some collectors value the quality and nostalgia of DVDs, Netflix had long planned to phase out its rental service. In 2009, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings predicted that the company would continue mailing DVDs until 2030.

As Netflix prepares to send out its final red envelope on September 29, 2023, the company expressed gratitude: “It has been a true pleasure and honor to deliver movie nights to our wonderful members for 25 years.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey, including this final season of red envelopes.”
