Ford, the parent company of Lincoln, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is alerting owners of nearly 143,000 Lincoln MKC compact SUVs to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles due to a potential fire risk, even when the vehicles are not running.
The issue is related to a battery monitoring sensor that might be damaged during the servicing of the battery or surrounding electric components due to its placement in the vehicle.
This damage can cause a short circuit, and without a fuse in the circuitry, it could result in overheating and a fire.
The recall affects Lincoln MKC SUVs from the model years 2015 through 2019.
According to NHTSA reports, Ford is aware of 19 “potentially related” underhood fires involving MKCs, most of which occurred in North America. However, there have been no reports of physical injuries related to these fires.
Owners will receive mail advising them to park their vehicles outside and away from other vehicles. They will also be instructed to bring their vehicles to a Lincoln dealer to have a fuse installed at no cost.
Concerned owners can contact a Lincoln dealer with any questions or reach Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
Additionally, owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting NHTSA’s SaferCar.gov website and entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
