Peloton is recalling 2.2 million exercise bikes due to a risk of the seat post breaking, and owners are advised to “immediately stop using” the bikes until they are repaired.
The recall impacts the Peloton model PL01, which was sold from January 2018 through May 2023.
“Peloton has received 35 reports of the seat post breaking and detaching from the bike during use, including 13 reports of injuries such as a fractured wrist, lacerations, and bruises from falling off the bike,” stated the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a recall notice.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled exercise bikes and contact Peloton for a free repair. Peloton is offering consumers a free seat post that can be self-installed,” the CPSC added.
Consumers can contact Peloton toll-free at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET, seven days a week, or get more information on Peloton’s website.
The recall only affects the original Peloton Bike sold in the United States and does not include international models or the more recent Bike+ model.
Previously, Peloton agreed to pay a $19 million fine for failing to report treadmill hazards and selling recalled equipment. Peloton’s CEO expressed confidence in the company’s future through its app despite equipment losing money.
This is not the first serious regulatory issue for the prominent maker of interactive exercise equipment.
In 2021, the CPSC advised consumers to stop using Peloton’s Tread+ treadmill following numerous safety incidents, including the death of one child. Earlier this year, Peloton agreed to pay a $19 million fine for not reporting these safety issues.
