Meta is investigating the development of a new decentralized, text-based social network that could rival Elon Musk’s Twitter.
This project, referred to by the codename P92, is planned as a standalone app, though users would access it using their Instagram credentials.
This strategy could attract Twitter users who are seeking alternatives following Musk’s acquisition and changes to the platform’s rules.
“We’re looking into a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” a Meta spokesperson told on Friday.
“We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”
This initiative would diversify Meta’s portfolio beyond Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, entering a domain currently dominated by Twitter.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri is leading the project, according to Platformer.
Decentralized social networks, such as Mastodon or Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky, operate on individual servers using a standard protocol, which prevents centralized control of content and potential censorship.
It is unclear how long Meta has been developing P92 or if it has progressed beyond the planning stage.
Additionally, Meta is considering potential integrations with existing social networks like Twitter or Mastodon, possibly utilizing a protocol known as ActivityPub.
