Online marketplace eBay has updated its smartphone app, allowing its merchants to visualize their items in shipping boxes from USPS. The feature leverages augmented reality to display a virtual shipping box around any item.
Although not as flashy as Zara’s recent AR initiative, this could be the very first augmented reality utility to go mainstream in the e-commerce world.
eBay slowly experimenting with augmented reality
This video—released as part of an article on eBay’s blog—shows how the feature works. Users will have to lay their item on a clean, non-reflective surface, and move their smartphone around for scale recognition. Once these steps are done, the app will show an augmented view of the item with a shipping box around it.
This first experiment could indicate that more AR-enabled features are coming from eBay in the future. Starting off with merchants is a good way for the company to get feedback. Ideally, this would translate into consumer-facing AR features landing on the famous online marketplace in the near future.
